Hi, I’m Marj - lifelong birder, backyard bird feeder, and founder of Rather Be Birding.

Birds have been part of my story for as long as I can remember. From the first time I held a pair of binoculars as a kid to the early mornings I now spend watching cardinals at my favorite feeder, birding has always been where I feel most at home. Confession: I still have my very first Peterson Guide!

Over the years, I’ve turned that lifelong passion into a career - managing wild bird seed stores for two major companies, leading community college workshops on beginner’s birding, and helping thousands of people discover the simple joy of connecting with the birds right outside their windows and the world beyond.

Beyond the store walls, I’ve been privileged to contribute to many citizen-science projects that make an investment in the future survival of our feathered friends - everything from raptor rehabilitation to breeding bird censuses. Each experience deepened my respect for birds and the people who care about them.

Rather Be Birding was born from that same love — and from a desire to make birding more accessible, beautiful, and rewarding for everyone. Whether you’re filling your first feeder or adding to your life list, my goal is to share products and insights that enhance your birding experience and help you feel part of something bigger - a community that values nature, stewardship, and wonder.
