Attracting Birds to Your Backyard
1 Minute Read - Simple Solutions
Want more birds in your yard? It doesnāt take much ā just a few thoughtful changes.
Start with water. A simple bird bath can double your species count. Keep it shallow, clean it often, and place it near (about 6 feet) shrubs so birds feel safe but not so close that cats can pounce.
Next, offer quality seed. Black oil sunflower attracts the widest range of birds. Add nyjer for finches and suet in winter. Skip cheap mixed seed and processed āpeopleā foods ā the wrong feed does more harm than good.
But hereās the secret: feeders are just the beginning. Native plants are the real foundation. They provide natural seeds, berries, insects for nesting birds, and protective cover. Even one native shrub can change your habitat overnight.
Safety matters too. Place feeders wisely to reduce window strikes. Keep cats indoors. Add baffles to deter raccoons. Provide layered cover ā trees, shrubs, grasses ā so birds have places to hide.
Think in seasons. Heated water in winter. Fresh nectar in summer. Leave seed heads standing in fall.
You donāt need a perfect yard. You need an intentional one.
Start small. Add water. Plant native. Offer safe food.
The birds will find you.
